I don't know what it is about Redding that mystifies this lineup, but it has to end tonight. I don't know if I can write another sarcastic entry about how good he is. You would've liked to see the Phillies score more than two runs last night, but it was enough to win. I hope they can at least get two tonight with a guy who dominates them on the mound. Jamie Moyer has success against the Nationals himself, so the Phillies have one thing going for them.

Game 106: Phillies at Nationals (1/3)

The Nationals are currently the worst team in baseball, but with the way they play against the Phillies, you would never know it. The Phillies lineup and pitching staff need to show they're out of their recent struggles by putting their feet down on Washington. For some reason, these guys just cannot hit Nats pitching, but this series, they need to prove scoring 21 runs the last two games against Atlanta wasn't a fluke. Compounding the problem will be facing a guy they've never seen before in Collin Balester. He's a good prospect, but he's yet to find much success at the ML level.
The Washington offense is either in a season-long slump or is just not good. Missing Elijah Dukes hurts, but if Myers can't have success against these guys, he's in trouble. They're last in the majors in runs, tied for 27th in home runs, last in batting average, 29th in OBP, last in SLG and last in OPS. Ouch. The Phillies will have to play strong defense behind Myers tonight, but they're really not a threat to take him deep.

The Phillies obviously have to hit better than they did last night. In their limited AB, it looks like they have some guys who have hit Bergmann a little bit, so they just need to put everything together. They absolutely cannot fall to 0-3 again. It would be the third straight year they've been swept in the opening series, and they can't keep putting themselves in a hole like that.
After a fan threw a beer bottle near Victorino on Opening Day, more people decided to get into the act last night by throwing hot dogs onto the field after the game. This is a ridiculous act, and it's things like this that give Philadelphia fans the national reputation they have. I'm not happy they got one hit by a guy that spent half of March on the DL, but act appropriately.

The Nationals may make some changes in their lineup. With Cole Hamels on the mound, they might opt to take lefty Nick Johnson out of the lineup and give Dmitri Young, a switch hitter, a start at 1B. Willie Harris could also be out, but with Elijah Dukes on the DL, which got him into the lineup in the first place, they may not have anyone to take his place.
The only difference for the Phillies will be Geoff Jenkins in place of Jayson Werth in RF, due to the righty Tim Redding on the mound.
If they get a lead, they just have to hold it tonight. I really can't say anything else. Hopefully I can get a full preview up before tomorrow's afternoon game.

It's Opening Day, and it's time for the Phillies to lay another egg to start the season. Hopefully they don't this time, but Chico has looked good in the few at-bats he's faced our lineup. Those are only predicted lineups based on expected platoons (and in Washington's case, what they did last night,) but on most days, real lineups will probably be available before I do this.
The Nationals may be a bit hung over from last night's game and travel, so if the Phillies can jump on them quick, they have a very good shot at winning the game. It's kind of unfair to Washington, but I'll take it.
